Responsible pet ownership

Dogs depend on us.

They are not hunters. They are not toys. They are not temporary gifts.

Abandonment hurts. Care saves lives.Feed them. Protect them. Love them.A lifetime commitment.

Dogs are domesticated animals who rely on people for food, water, shelter, safety, medical care, and love. They should never be expected to survive on their own.

In Texas, too many dogs are abandoned, dumped, neglected, or left behind when they are no longer wanted. This creates suffering, overcrowded shelters, and a growing stray animal crisis in our communities.

Texas has a serious stray and abandonment problem. Be part of the solution, not the reason it continues. If you cannot commit to caring for a dog for their entire life, please do not get one.

Every animal deserves food, safety, shelter, and love.

Before getting a dog, remember:

  • A puppy will grow up.
  • A dog is a long-term commitment.
  • Food, vaccines, flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, and veterinary care are ongoing responsibilities.
  • Dogs need shelter from extreme Texas heat, cold, rain, and storms.
  • They need patience, training, attention, and compassion.
  • They are family, not disposable.

Responsible pet ownership saves lives.

  • Feed your dog every day.
  • Provide clean water at all times.
  • Keep them safe and sheltered.
  • Spay and neuter to help prevent unwanted litters.
  • Do not dump or abandon animals.
  • Ask for help before giving up on a pet.
